Ford has just announced that Australia will be getting a Plug-in Hybrid Ford Escape SUV in 2020.

The first electrified Ford SUV offered to Australians provides strong driving dynamics on an advanced new platform. It will have an all new sleek and spacious aero-efficient design with improved cabin space due to the longer wheelbase.

Incorporating a highly advanced powertrain it will have fully-electric mobility for reduced emissions and running costs with greater refinement. Multiple driving modes will enable drivers to maximise their efficiency based on the driving conditions, with the fully-electric mode anticipated to deliver more than 50 kilometres of smooth, zero tailpipe emissions driving.

“We’re proud to bring the first of our global electrified vehicles to Australian customers in the stylish and capable all-new Escape,” said Ford Australia and New Zealand President and CEO, Kay Hart. “Australians continue to embrace SUVs, which is why we are introducing our first plug-in hybrid powertrain with this vehicle.”

On sale in 2020 the all-new Ford Escape will be part of a broader SUV line-up including both PHEV and optimised EcoBoost powertrains. This means that Ford drivers will have more choice, flexibility and greater up-to-the minute technology in a stylish package with the added peace of mind that they are saving both at the fuel pump and in emissions.

The Ford Escape PHEV’s battery will be able to be recharged using an integrated charging port and is automatically replenished on the move using regenerative charging technology that captures kinetic energy normally lost during braking. When the battery reaches its lowest state-of-charge, the system automatically switches to petrol engine power with the electric motor recapturing energy to optimise fuel-efficiency.

Further specification and details regarding the Escape’s elegant, sophisticated design, premium paint finishes, including demarcation via unique light signatures, and detailing such as intakes, valences, grille facia and Australian-market pricing will be announced closer to the all-new Ford Escape’s launch in 2020.
